The Boiler Shop is one of the remaining buildings of the Robert Stephenson and Company works, the first commercial locomotive works in the world. Locomotives for the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the first railway in the world to carry passengers and goods with steam traction, were made here. 2025 will mark the 200th anniversary of the opening of the S&DR, 'the birth of the modern railway'.
